Four miles of congestion after multi-vehicle crash on M6 between junctions 39 and 38 near Tebay

Traffic was stopped on the M6 southbound following a multi-vehicle collision.

The M6 southbound was held between junctions 39 (Shap) and 38 (Tebay) following a multi-vehicle crash at around 3.35pm on Monday (August 22).

Cumbria Police attended the scene alongside traffic officers and other emergency services.

“Please allow extra time to travel as there is approximately four miles of congestion,” a spokesman for National Highways said.

All lanes reopened at around 5.10pm but heavy traffic remained in the area.

It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the collision.

The M61 northbound was also blocked between junctions 6 (Horwich) and 8 (Chorley) following a multi-vehicle crash at around 2.55pm on Monday.

At 4.25pm, traffic was allowed to pass the scene via the hard shoulder but the live lanes remained closed as the area was cleared.

Heavy traffic remained in the area as a result with delays of approximately 45 minutes reported on approach.
