What the facts and figures show about the impact of domestic violence in the UK.
- There were 23,329 domestic violence incidents reported to Lancashire police between April 2005 and March 2006
- Nationally, one incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute
- The Home Office states domestic violence accounts for 16% of all violent crime and has more repeat victims than any other crime - on average there will have been 35 assaults before a victim calls the police
- A recent study for the government by Professor Sylvia Walby, of Lancaster University, estimates the overall cost of domestic violence across the country to be £23b, which breaks down to a cost of £404 per person in the UK
