At our October meeting, the president, Doreen Smart and members were intrigued to hear from Mrs Jean Surrey about 'Great Grandma's Workbox'.
We learnt that the workbox evolved from the chatelaine which was worn around the waist and carried keys and sewing equipment, etc which was instantly available when something needed mending.

Workboxes began to be brought back by sailors from India and the Far East as presents. They were made from wood and ivory but were not very practical at first because the contents were unsuitable.

Most obvious contents of the workbox were needles and thread- a different type of needle for each type of thread.

Mrs Surrey told us about the history of needles and pins and how valued and expensive they were, being only available at first to wealthy people. They were very welcome gifts.

Everyone was fascinated by the items to be seen and had many questions for Mrs Surrey.

Names were taken for a visit to Radio Lancashire- 'Ladies at Lunch' programme and a 'Wish List' compiled for the Memorial Hall.
